Removal of Barriers to Biomass Power Generation in India, Phase I
What is the Project About
With support from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, funded by Global Environment Facility, the project aims to accelerate the use of environmentally sustainable biomass power and co generation technologies in the country and improve electricity supply through renewable energy sources.
What Have We Accomplished So Far
- Studies relating to the identification of barriers, resource assessment, performance evaluations of biomass power plants, reviewing the policy and regulatory frameworks, development of model documents, roadmap for biomass power, and the social, economic and environmental impact of biomass power were published
- A knowledge base for biomass power generation was developed through the launch of a web-based biomass knowledge portal (www.biomasspower.gov.in) and the publication of a quarterly magazine, BioPower India
- Several model investment projects were launched, including:
- Four existing biomass power plants with a cumulative capacity of 37.5 MW (two in Punjab and one each in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh) that shared almost half their power to provide support for fuel linkages
- A small-scale biomass gasification power plant of 1.2 MW capacity in Sankheda, Gujarat that supplied electricity to a company on an open access model
- The commissioning of two projects based on the combustion of coffee husk with cumulative capacity of 3 MW, with the first in Maharashtra and the second in Karnataka. Electricity generated from this plant is to be supplied to nearby coffee industries and/ or the Karnataka Power Corporation
- Policy inputs were provided to overcome identified barriers to biomass power plants in policy and regulatory frameworks, financing and sustainable biomass fuel linkages
- Inputs were provided to the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to revise feed-in tariffs
