The United Nations flagship knowledge management initiative, Solution Exchange wins the eWorld Public Choice Award for ‘Best Initiative for Localized Application/Content' at the Second eWorld Forum awards. The eWorld 2012 Awards encourage continued use of technology for solving governance challenges, and enabling governments to be more responsive, effective and citizen-oriented.

This year’s World Ocean Day falls on the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. To commemorate the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urges all countries to ratify the Convention on the Law of the Sea, and do more to protect the oceans, which are threatened by pollution, depleted fishery resources, the impacts of climate change and deterioration of marine environment.

During his three-day visit, the Secretary-General will meet with country’s senior political leadership to discuss current regional and international issues, and with business leaders committed to promoting the health of women and children. Bangkok - Asia-Pacific cartoons depicting the effects of climate change on children, Chinese cities, the Pacific Islands and mangrove forests won a regional contest sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of France. Cartoonists from Bangladesh, China, India, Lao PDR, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines have been recognized on this year’s Earth Day for their original artwork depicting climate change and human development in Asia-Pacific countries.

New York - The Equator Initiative announced yesterday the names of twenty-five local community groups to receive the Equator Prize 2012 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to sustainable development. Among the winners that were selected from 812 nominations submitted by communities in 113 countries across the developing world, was India’s Shashwat group, a grassroots initiative that was developed in response to the displacement of Koli Mahadeo, Thakarsand Katkaris tribal peoples by construction of the Dimbhe dam.
