Call for Nomination: GoI-UNDP India Biodiversity Awards (Closed)May 13, 2012
India has a rich heritage of biodiversity that provides ecological, economic, social, cultural, spiritual, educational, scientific and aesthetic services to millions of people. The country is committed to protect this globally significant biodiversity, and has vast experience in natural resource conservation with diverse models of biodiversity management in operation, ranging from officially-managed protected areas to community-led conservation. However, the valuable work done by biodiversity managers at the grassroots has remained unsung, even as the value of biodiversity itself has begun to be widely recognized. For that reason, national recognition of these outstanding biodiversity management cases will not only provide an additional impetus to them, but also spread awareness for an improved ecosystem management.
Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are instituting national awards for biodiversity management. The award of INR 100,000 and citations will be given to outstanding cases of biodiversity management that have been in existence for at least five years in the four categories given below-
- Community stewardship – Community-led biodiversity management by autonomous community institutions
- Decentralized governance – Biodiversity management by local self-governments and local-level statutory institutions
- Co-management – Biodiversity jointly managed by communities and the Government
- Protected Areas – Effective and innovative management practices by management agencies of Protected Areas
The selection criteria have been set according to the level of participation, equity and accountability in biodiversity management, and effectiveness in conserving biodiversity and improving the livelihood of communities. The awards will be presented during the 11th Conference of Parties (CoP 11) at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will be held in October 2012 in Hyderabad.
Please note that the awards will be given to the community institutions directly involved in biodiversity management for the first three categories mentioned above, and to the management agency in the fourth category. Submission deadline: 22nd June 2012.
