    Local Communities Play a Key Role in Preserving the Himalayas

    Local communities are crucial to the survival of the Himalayan ecosystem, one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important regions in Asia. This was the key message emerging from a three-day summit in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland in the North East of India. The summit brought together governments from India’s Himalayan states to discuss how a host of environmental and ecological pressures are threatening the existence of the ecosystem on which an estimated 700 million people in the region depend on. The Summit was supported by UNDP and other partners.

    IC4HD Human Development Fellowships

    The International Centre for Human Development has announced seven human development fellowships for the year 2013. The three-month residential fellowships, beginning 12 August 2013, will be offered at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. The selected fellows will receive US$ 3,000 per month. IC4HD Human Development Fellowships aim to encourage mid-career professionals (academics, civil servants, and civil society practitioners) to analyze critical development issues from the human development perspective, thereby, contributing to development theory, and identification of applications and policies that put people at the centre of development debates.

    World Environment Day

    UNDP has partnered with the Government of India to promote low carbon, climate resilient and inclusive development. Key areas of intervention are climate change (mitigation and adaptation), sustainable natural resource management (conserving biodiversity and addressing land degradation) and environmentally sound chemical management (phasing out of ozone depleting substances and reducing persistent organic pollutants). The loss of biodiversity and the changing climate are among the most prominent issues on the international agenda. These are not only environmental concerns; the issues are linked to the nature of economic development, poverty reduction, natural disasters, and peace and security. The health of the world’s biodiversity and climate is fundamental to all aspects of human well‐being.

    International Day for Biological Diversity

    On International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re focusing on the impact of our project in Sindhudurg coastal district, which is one of the most biodiverse areas in Maharashtra. The project, supported by the Government of Maharashtra and the Global Environment Facility, has been addressing biodiversity challenges while improving livelihoods of coastal communities since 2011 through sustainable fishing, agriculture, horticulture and conservation of mangroves, turtles and coral reef cover. The project has also sought to collaborate with local communities towards generating awareness about biodiversity amidst the threat of unsustainable fishing practices, rising pollution from fishing vessels and maritime traffic.

The Equator Prize is a prestigious international award that recognizes innovation and leadership in community-based sustainable development approaches.

    Skill Development Training Programme on Sub-Megawatt Biomass-based Power Generation

    A UNDP supported training programme to develop skills of technicians to manage sub-megawatt, biomass-based power generation is being held from 25 Feb to 6 March in Bangalore. The programme will sensitize technicians on the principles of gasification, how to operate and maintain a gasifier and the safety issues involved in managing biomass-based power generation in India.

    Green Haat 2013 – Connecting Nature with our Lives

    The unique display and sale of eco products from across the country from 16 to 31 January 2013 included herbal remedies, handicrafts from non-timber forest products and organic food that are testament to the diversity and innovativeness of India’s local entrepreneurs. Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the 14-day display included participation of 14 groups that are recipients of the GEF Small Grants Programme implemented by UNDP.

    Brainstorming towards a Competency Framework for India’s Civil Services

    A day-long brainstorming session, to provide crucial inputs to the draft framework which helps understand and define competency in the Indian Civil Services, was organized by UNDP in partnership with the Government of India. The draft competency framework developed as part of the PIIA project, a joint collaboration between UNDP and the Government of India, is being implemented by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personal, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoP). A key objective is to support the shift towards the Competency-based Human Resource Management of the Indian Civil Services.

    Equitable Access to Justice: Legal Empowerment, Legal Aid and Making it work for the Poor and Marginalised

    UNDP organized an international conference to share good practices and innovative approaches to enabling legal empowerment and securing legal aid for poor communities. At the conference, two knowledge products- a training manual for judges on laws and issues related to marginalized communities; and user manual on Forest Rights Act and Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas Act, 1996) were also released.

    Rebeca Grynspan Meets Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests

    Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UN Associate Administrator and UNDP Associate Administrator met with Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests, Government of India during the Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity Diversity. The Minister acknowledged UNDP’s strength in promoting international cooperation on development and innovation, and UNDP’s support in making learning a shared experience across nations.
