New Delhi - Today, at United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction, the Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme India publishes new guidelines to improve disaster risk management in hosptials and health facilities. One is “Guidelines for Hospital Emergency Preparedness Planning” and the second is “Guidelines for Seismic Safety of Non Structural Elements and Contents in Hospital Buildings”. The publications also pick up the theme of the 2008/2009 United Nations World Disaster Reduction Campaign: Reduce risk, protect Health facilities, save lives”.

At least 22,980 people were killed and more than 42,000 are still missing after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar on 2-3 May, according to State authorities. Sweeping through the country’s largest city, Yangon, and the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) Delta region, the cyclone has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Both areas remain official disaster zones.

New Delhi - According to the UNDP-commissioned Human Development Report 2006, India is on its way to achieving the Millennium Development Goal on water, having made progress on enabling access to water to its rural and urban population. It also says that access to sanitation is lagging and there is need to accelerate progress.
