Bhubaneswar - Development professionals, grassroots activists, academicians, government officials and policymakers from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal will come together at a Regional Gender Workshop in Bhubaneswar on 27 and 28 February 2009. The Workshop has been organised by the United Nations, under the Solution Exchange (SE) initiative for the Gender Community. The members of this electronic network will help to strengthen knowledge across sectors so that they together can solve problems and effectively implement policies, projects and programmes on gender.

Urban India has a high incidence of poverty despite being hailed as an engine of growth and instrument of globalization. Eighty-one million people subsist in urban areas on incomes that are below the poverty line. The pace of urbanization in India is set to increase, and with it, urban poverty and urban slums. However, public policy measures for urban India have lacked focus and proper allocation of funds. There is thus an urgent need at the national level to document the key issues in urban poverty, to assess the tasks at hand, and plan for the future.

Date: 1 December, 2008 World AIDS Day: The Red Ribbon Award Ceremony UNDP India activities on World AIDS Day, 1 December, 2008 On World AIDS Day on 1 December 2008, UNDP held a special award ceremony and film screening at the Stein Auditorium, Habitat World. In addition, UNDP organized a week long radio campaign on HIV with FM 104.8 that reached 48 lakh people in five cities of India.

New Delhi - Arbind Singh, Executive Director, Nidan, was today announced as the winner of the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2008 in India. Montek S. Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, India, conferred the award on Arbind Singh at the World Economic Forum’s India Economic Summit. In India, the Social Entrepreneur Year of the Award is an initiative of The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation and The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in collaboration with the UNDP.
