Access to modern energy services plays a crucial role in advancing human development and in addressing poverty and inequality. Lack of access to clean and reliable energy has been identified as a major constraint in furthering many aspects of human prosperity. However despite continued discussions, practitioners and policy-makers continue to grapple with the challenge of integrating human development objectives appropriately in energy access initiatives. Identifying the need for an integrated approach to energy access and human development in planning and policymaking, the International Centre for Human Development (IC4HD), in collaboration with the Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence (RMCE), Mauritius and UNDP organised a three day training programme between 19th to 21st November 2013 at Port Louis, Mauritius on Energy Access for Sustainable Human Development in Africa. The training design and implementation was supported by a team of experts from The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Local communities are crucial to the survival of the Himalayan ecosystem, one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important regions in Asia. This was the key message emerging from a three-day summit in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland in the North East of India. The summit brought together governments from India’s Himalayan states to discuss how a host of environmental and ecological pressures are threatening the existence of the ecosystem on which an estimated 700 million people in the region depend on. The Summit was supported by UNDP and other partners.
