New York - The current global economic crisis, which began with the severe strains on the financial and banking system in parts of the developed world, now risks triggering a human development catastrophe in the world’s poorest countries. As the leaders of the richest nations set off to London for the G-20 summit this Thursday, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) warns that those most vulnerable to the crisis are living outside the spotlight and their predicament should be addressed at the table.

On 8 March, International Women’s Day, United Nations Calls for Increased Action to End Violence Against Women
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on 8 March, is “Women and Men United to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” The theme ties in with the Secretary-General’s wider campaign “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women,” which he launched in 2008, to run through 2015, the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The Workshop has been organised by the United Nations, under the Solution Exchange (SE) initiative for the Gender Community. The members of this electronic network will help to strengthen knowledge across sectors so that they together can solve problems and effectively implement policies, projects and programmes on gender.

Urban India has a high incidence of poverty despite being hailed as an engine of growth and instrument of globalization. Eighty-one million people subsist in urban areas on incomes that are below the poverty line. The pace of urbanization in India is set to increase, and with it, urban poverty and urban slums. However, public policy measures for urban India have lacked focus and proper allocation of funds. There is thus an urgent need at the national level to document the key issues in urban poverty, to assess the tasks at hand, and plan for the future.
