Statement by Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the occasion of World AIDS Day
The international community observes World AIDS Day each year on December 1st. On this day we focus this year on the need for effective HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, and support. Data released by UNAIDS this week in its 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update suggests that new HIV infections around the world have been reduced by seventeen percent since the 2001 signature of the United Nations Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS.

Global Fund Poised to Award its First - ever Major Regional Grant to Help Reduce Impact of HIV and AIDS on Men Who Have Sex with Men
Lucknow, India - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved in principle a landmark US $47 million grant for a community-strengthening programme aimed at reducing the rapid and alarming spread of HIV and AIDS among men who have sex with men and among transgender people in South Asia.

The Secretary-General Message on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
New York - In the ten years since the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the circle of engagement has widened. More groups and individuals, including men and boys, are getting involved in efforts to prevent and address this heinous violation of women’s human rights. There has also been significant progress at the national level as many countries have adopted laws and comprehensive action plans.
