    2014 Human Development Report Calls on Countries to Take Steps Now to Protect Hard Won Gains

    Staggering rates of poverty and high inequality threaten the gains in human development in South Asia. To protect these gains and ensure that all people are benefiting from the region’s growth, UNDP’s annual Human Development Report, released today in Tokyo, shows that the combination of social protection floors, universal basic services, full employment and programmes that specifically address discrimination and inclusion can help countries to irreversibly eradicate poverty.

    UN MDG Report 2014: Poverty, Malnutrition and Sanitation Remain Concerns for India

    The new Millennium Development Goals Report 2014 examines the latest progress made towards achieving the MDGs. It shows that millions of people’s lives have improved due to concerted global, regional, national and local efforts to achieve the MDGs, which serve as the foundation for the next global development agenda. The Report was released in India by Najma Heptulla, the Union Minister for Minority Affairs. Jayati Ghosh, Professor, JNU and Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator also spoke on the occasion.

    Contributing to Energy Saving: Recognition to UNDP

    S.N. Srinivas, Programmme Officer with UNDP India has been awarded the Hitech’s 2014 India’s Leading Energy Saving Expert Award for his contribution to energy saving in the steel sector. The Award was presented by HITEC India, a non-profit organization that aims to promote IT solutions, next generation networks and enabled services to India. The Awards recognize experts across industrial sectors that have made a significant contribution to using technologies to address the complex problems facing industry and Government in India.

    Advancing Universal Health Coverage in India

    A panel discussion on ‘Advancing Universal Health Coverage in India: Lessons from International Experience’ was organised by the United Nations in India. The speakers including Professor Indrani Gupta, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, India; Dr Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India; Ms Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator and experts from the World Health Organisation Dr Vivian Lin, Dr Rüdiger Krech, Dr Alaka Singh and Dr Antonio Duran deliberated on India’s route to universal coverage and lessons to be learnt from countries in different regions of the world.
