The Ministry of Steel, Government of India, supported by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility, has helped 25 steel re-rolling mills across India reduce energy consumption and cut down greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

From Rags to Riches: Hiware Bazaar in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra

This is the story of Hiware Bazaar, a village in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. From a village with 90 percent poverty and per capita income of only INR 842 in 1989, the village today boasts of a per capita income of INR 28,000. In addition, steps taken to recharge groundwater through rainwater and artificial re-harvesting not only brought up the groundwater from 50 feet to 5-10 feet, but also made it a water surplus area. The village was also recognized with a National Water Award from the Ministry of Water Resources for its commendable work in groundwater recharging.
