Manav Vikas: India Human Development Awards 2012

The first-ever India Human Development Awards 2012 instituted by the Planning Commission and UNDP recognizes excellence in human development reporting and analysis across the country. It is an attempt to encourage excellence in content and analysis, advocacy for action on promoting human development, emphasize the participatory process that is critical to human development and ensure people centered district planning.


Excellence in the preparation of district-level Human Development Reports is recognized in four categories:

  • Participatory processes of preparation

  • Quality of analysis

  • Focus on gender and inclusion issues

  • Innovation in measurement

  • Award of excellence to a state that has been outstanding (overall) in the preparation of district HDRs

The India Human Development Awards:

  • RECOGNIZE state/district authorities that put human development at the heart of the political agenda and local development strategies

  • PROVIDE incentives for high-quality HDRs that can be effective tools for planning

  • SHARE HDR good practices

  • DEVELOP collaborative platforms advocating for human development-oriented planning through partnerships at the local level

  • HELP position human development as a dynamic catalyst for innovative, nationally owned policy solutions

  • ENGAGE the media and demonstrate effective use of the HDRs as an advocacy tool within the campaign for the MDGs and local development goals
