The Disaster Management Community comprises a group of professionals from a wide range of organizations and disciplines working on issues related to disasters (natural or human induced) such as preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery and rehabilitation.
Disasters erode development gains. In order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), it is important to ensure reduction of disaster risk through structural and non-structural measures.
The Community aims to reduce disaster risk to sustain development gains. This is done by leveraging the knowledge and experience of development practitioners towards problem solving.
Solution Exchange connects the members of this Community and enables them to share their knowledge and experience with others across the country.
Key issues addressed by the Disaster Management Community:
Launched in 2005, Solution Exchange India (SE) is an online platform that facilitates knowledge sharing and learning amongst people, practitioners and communities dedicated to addressing development challenges in India. Run by the United Nations in India, online groups, called CoP, the platform enables members of academia, non-governmental organizations, grassroots practitioners, researchers and the government functionaries to share experiences and best practices, build partnerships, learn about the latest technologies that can help advance change and brainstorm with peers towards solutions that can improve the lives of the poorest and most marginalized.
SE works through 12 thematic ‘Communities of Practice’ (CoP) that focus on connecting practitioners; tapping knowledge; disseminating experiences; facilitating feedback; seeding ideas; replicating good practices; and catalyzing collaborations. Everyone in a CoP belongs to a mail-group, facilitated by a resource team located in a UN Agency, which helps members to connect, share and collaborate virtually as well as face-to-face.
