Visit of Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator

UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator Rebeca Grynspan visited India from 10 to 18 October 2012. During her visit, she addressed delegates at the eleventh meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Hyderabad, and met with several Union Cabinet Ministers such as Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Human Resource Development and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister for Rural Development; Kishore Chandra Deo, Minister of Tribal Affairs and Panchayati Raj and Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister of Environment and Forests. She also addressed a high-level consultation on the role of women as elected leaders at a roundtable consultation organized by UNDP, and visited Uttar Pradesh to witness the work of Swaayam, a UNDP-IKEA Foundation partnership, being implemented since 2009.

UNDP Unveils Ambitious Global Strategy to Protect Biodiversity

UNDP has unveiled a new global strategy to protect biodiversity that calls for a significant scaling up of investments in 100 countries by 2020. As part of the strategy, UNDP will work with national governments to protect biodiversity and manage ecosystems across 1.4 billion hectares of land and bodies of water.

New Delhi, 12 October 2012 - Under this agreement UNDP and the Ministry of Rural Development of Rural Development will collaborate to accelerate development efforts in 10 left-wing extremism affected districts with large tribal populations. The two entities will also intensify their on-going engagement on India’s flagship rural employment guarantee prrogramme that has provided jobs to over 54 million people. UNDP has committed $10 million over a five year period for the project with a commitment of $20 million from the Ministry.
