Mr. Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director, UNDPvisited India from 13 to 17 December 2013. During his visit, Mr. Xu is meeting met with senior representatives from the Government and civil society. On a trip to Jaipur, Rajasthan, Mr. Xu visited the MPK steel re-rolling mill which has significantly reduced power consumption through adopting a range of energy efficiency measures implemented as part of a partnership between UNDP and the Ministry of Steel. The Regional Director also visited a work site of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the world’s largest employment guarantee scheme and interacted with local leaders and women employed under the Scheme.

Haoliang Xu Visits the Award-Winning Steel Re-Rolling Mill, MPK Steel in Jaipur
14 December 2013, Jaipur - On day 2 of his visit, Mr. Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director, UNDP visited the award-winning steel re-rolling mill, MPK Steel in Jaipur. The mill, with support from UNDP, the Ministry of Steel and the Global Environment Facility, reduced its energy consumption by 30%, cut coal consumption by 45% and increase productivity by 68%.

Companies in the highly polluting steel-rerolling sector in India are introducing measures to improve energy efficiency as a result of a partnership between UNDP and the Ministry of Steel. In doing so, they are demonstrating that the industry can become more energy efficient, more environmentally conscious and more profitable. Mr. Haoliang Xu, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director, UNDP visited one such success story in Jaipur, Rajasthan and saw first-hand how the company has innovated to improve productivity and reduce specific fuel consumption.
